General InformationNorwalk was established as a "Contract City" and continues to operate in that manner. A Contract City is a City in which services such as police and fire are contracted with another agency. The City of Norwalk contracts with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for these services.
Our community is considered a "no/low property tax" community, which means that we receive a very small percentage of property tax collected by the County of Los Angeles. The City's major resource contributors are sales taxes, vehicle license fees from the State, utility user tax, and service fees. In addition, the City receives restricted funds to be used only for specific areas, such as, street improvements, transportation, park improvements, etc., from the State and Federal governments.
|Taxable Sales:||$985 Million in 2005|
The opening of Norwalk's Metrolink and Green Line commuter rail stations have enormously improved access to the City's business centers. Employees working in Norwalk can now commute to their workplace from Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties (Metrolink) and from the Los Angeles International Airport to the Norwalk MTA Station (Green Line). The Norwalk Transit System provides fixed route bus service, seven days a week, within Norwalk and to adjacent communities.
