California State law requires all dogs over the age of 4 months to be licensed annually. Licenses need to be purchased within 30 days of obtaining the dog or at 4 months of age. To register your pet and obtain a license you must be 18 years of age or older and have your pet's current Rabies Vaccination Certificate. There is no license require for cats.

How to Obtain a Dog License


In Person

By Mail:

  • Mail copies of dog’s rabies certificate, certificate of sterility (if applicable) and/or copy of owner's I.D. for senior discount.

  • Make check or money order payable to “City of Norwalk.” Please do not send cash.

  • Mail your paperwork and payment to:

Licensing year runs from July 1st – June 30th of every year.

  • Starting January 1, Dog licenses will be prorated for the amount of time remaining in the licensing period.
